A fast-growing, spreading, deciduous tree with plated, dark grey bark and oblong to lance-shaped, deeply lobed or toothed, dark green leaves, pale green beneath, turning yellow-brown in autumn. Clusters or catkins of inconspicuous, yellow-green flowers in spring are followed by acorns with bristly cups.
Height 30m (98ft), Spread 25m (82ft), 20-50 years to maturity.
