Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' (Japanese Maple)

A deciduous, slow-growing large shrub or small tree with deeply lobed, red-purple leaves which retain their colour all summer before turning a brilliant red in autumn. Needs a sheltered position to protect it from cold winds, especially from the east. Tiny purple-red flowers are followed in autumn by red winged fruits. Plant in fertile, moist, but well drained soil.
Height 4m (13ft), Spread 2m (6ft), 20-50 years to maturity.
